Mens League Division 1 Match 1 Report
« Thread Started on Apr 21, 2009, 9:45pm »

A run down of happenings at Meadowbank. Note Stuart Gibson is referred to as Stuart G and Stuart Jamieson as Stuart J.

A glorious day of sunshine beckoned as bits and bobs of the Whitemoss squad assembled for another go at the Mens League. Some met at the JWSC, others went directly. Some nearly ended up at the wrong place altogether. Paul White originally thought he was off to Grangemouth. He could have if it was the Womens League he was after. Stuart G originally planned to go directly but car trouble the day before saw him beg a lift from Keith who originally thought he had departed without John Robertson. Imagine his relief as he overtook Mark Stringer on the Edinburgh by pass, not only with Willie Sutherland in the front but John in the back.

At the old Commonwealth Stadium, the club treasurer was duly fleeced of the affiliation fee and the action kicked off at 12 noon. Keith Stoddart filled the hammer, 7th A with 25.73m. No B competitor for us. At the pole vault, multi eventer Craig McEwan began a hectic day, 8th A with 2.80m. John Robertson filled in for his brother, 4th B, 2.80m, creeping closer to 3m.

Stuart G began a day long activity taking photos. He approached two workmen who appeared to be lifting scaffolding. On closer inspection, it was only Willie and Mark officiating at the pole vault. Steven Whyteside's first duty was the hammer.

On the track, the 400m hurdles saw Scott Davidson finish 4th (60.84 secs) and athlete turned kick boxer Billy McGill win the B race (64.53 secs). Over 800m, Stuart J ran an impressive 2:06.34 in a very fast race. Sadly, Paul White pulled up after 200m. Mascot baby Calum, minded by Julie Whyteside, gurgled with laughter. Things then picked up for Paul though when he threw the shot putt 7.99m. Iain McEwan Junior filled the A slot, chucking 8.66m.

At the long jump, forklift truck driver Ryan Holmes claimed 5th with a useful 5.35m. Stuart G confidently volunteered here remembering his 4.61m effort at the 2008 club championships. The confidence was misguided as he managed a meek 4.30m, 20cm short of the minimum standard, nil points.

The track raged on with the 100m. Iain McEwan Junior was 5th A (11.60 secs) and Ryan Holmes 7th B (12.54 secs). The guest 100m let Mens League debutant Zach Bryson stretch his legs. He got a similar time to Ryan. Stuart G felt more at home in the 3000m steeplechase water than the long jump sand, claiming 3rd overall in a PB of 10:09.16. No B runner sadly, Joe Kealey was at a christening.

Over 400m, Scott Davidson powered to 3rd A runner in 50.68 secs. Paul White's afternoon improved, 6th B with 57.95 secs. In the field, we were battling gamely. For the discus we had Craig McEwan (6th A, 33.63m) and Keith Stoddart (5th B, 31.47m, PB). The same pairing did the discus, finishing 7th A (30.77m) and 5th B (22.19m) respectively. Steven the official official showed no favouritism throughout the discus. No-one felt up to the triple jump.

Two second claim men filled the 1500m. Alistair Campbell bravely set off in the lead. He ran out of steam but hung on for 7th A in 4:13.06. Martin Duthie tried the other tactic, hanging back then working through to be 4th B in 4:26.14. Meanwhile, Iain McEwan Senior enjoyed a high jump outing, 7th A with 1.60m. Unfortunately Zach Bryson didn't register a clearance. It is Standard Grade exam time for him. He has time on his side.

The individual track programme reached the 200m. Iain McEwan Junior was 4th A in 22.79 secs and Jamie 2nd B in 23.30 secs. Over 5000m, Martin Duthie pulled up a few laps in feeling his calf tightening. Stuart G kept going for his 2nd PB of the day, 15:59.53 and 4th A. Long jump? What long jump?

Finally came the relays. Happily no-one had to double up. Field officials Mark, Willie and Steven went for their sandwiches during this. Zach Bryson, Ryan Holmes, Billy McGill and Iain McEwan Junior got the baton safely from A to B, 6th in 46.17 secs.

Now, as the song goes, "sometimes the snow comes down in June, sometimes the sun goes round the moon, just when I thought my chance had passed, you've gone and saved the best for last." Anyone know it? Ach, please yourselves. Anyway, Whitemoss did save the best for last. A team of heroes, Scott Davidson, Alistair Campbell, Stuart J and Jamie McEwan, stormed through to win the 4x400m by 1.22 secs, in 3:26.57, an average of 51 secs per leg. That will do nicely.

A combination of a few blanks in the team sheet, missing personnel and dumplings not making the minimum standard ::) saw us 7th on the day. Points were as follows:-

Central, 324
Edinburgh, 306
Arbroath, 297
Aberdeen, 274
Pitreavie, 248
Shettleston, 202
Whitemoss, 201
VP Glasgow, 137

So a scoring long jump effort from Stuart G gets us 6th.

Summary- performance wise in the events covered, it was probably as good as we could expect. Gaps in the team sheet are the main reason we have not finished higher. Still, 3 meetings to go. There is no reason why we cannot gain a respectable position in that time.

Next time out is Grangemouth on 31st May. Bring it on.

Thanks for reading all this.

Stuart
