Men’s League Report - Match 1 - 22nd April 2007 – Grangemouth
The day started out at 10 am in the JWSC car park, but the weather looked ominous with clouds and rain threatening. Not a good start to the day, as last year we were spoilt with glorious sunshine at all four meetings. However, hopefully the weather in the east was better. Fortunately no call offs and everyone turned up on time.
We were one of the convening clubs today, so thankfully I had talked Becci into coming along as her key board skills far exceed mine. Cathy was also roped into helping out with collating points and filling in event cards and team details. Young John ably assisted as a runner between starters, time keepers and conveners box. At least he can say he ran at the Men’s League now.
The First and Second Division’s were amalgamated this season, due to a shortage of officials and this made the day a little longer, but a lot busier than before. Normally each division competes on the same date, but at different venues.
The field events kicked off at 12 noon sharp with the pole vault and David Robertson came second equalling his p.b. at 3.8 mts and Craig McEwan also came second with a credible 2.4 mts. In the Long Jump Jamie McEwan came third with a jump of 5.26 mts and Callum White was drafted in last minute to come fourth with 4.56 mts.
The track started of with the 400 mts hurdles, not everyone cup of tea, but Craig McEwan, hot from the pole vault came second with a 67.64 second circuit and Mark Stringer was fourth with a 73.1 second finish.
Next was the Hammer and with a distinct shortage of big powerful throwers, yours truly and Graeme Leggate filled the card. Keith Stoddart came fifth with a p.b at 26.99 mts and Graeme was second with a 17.97 launch, though he was slightly under the weather. This was quickly followed by the 800mts, where Ryan Grant held on well to come fourth in a time of 2.05.16. Stuart Gibson was drafted in and surprised himself with fifth place in a time of 2.07.59 and a p.b.
The 100 mts flat was contested with Jamie McEwan coming fourth in a time of 11.82 and Callum White coming third in 12.43.
At the High Jump, Ryan Grant came fourth with a clearance of 1.70 mts and David Robertson drew first place with a leap of 1.65 mts.
The 3000 mts Steeplechase is an event where we have athlete’s queuing up to compete in, unfortunately we could only field one athlete this time, but Stuart Gibson ran a great race coming second with a credible time of 10.40.40. Unfortunately with no second string runner we dropped a few points here.
The 110 mts hurdles is another favourite and Mark Stringer ran close third in 21.82 seconds. Our other hurdler was unavailable this time and again we dropped a few points here.
In the 400 mts flat Alistair Campbell stepped down from his usual 800 mts and surprised everyone with a win in 51.56 seconds with Jamie McEwan coming seventh in 54.09 seconds.
The big throwers were back in action in the shot where Graeme Leggate threw 8.34 mts to finish seventh and Keith Stoddart threw 7.87 to come second.
In the 1500 mts Alistair Campbell unfortunately had to pull out with a calf strain, knowing he still had a leg of the 400 to come. Martin Duthie finished sixth with a time of 4.33.69, knowing he had just been asked to stand in for a late call off in the 5000 mts, 30 minutes later.
The 200 mts were next, Billy McGill finished second in 23.06 seconds and Callum White came fifth in 24.95 seconds.
The 5000 mts quickly followed where the Trojans, Stuart Gibson came fifth in 16.49.2 and Martin Duthie finished second in 17.34.6, well done guys.
The last field event was the javelin where we were not let down. George Dingwall finished first with an under par 49.51 mts and Craig McEwan also came first with a credible launch of 34.19 mts before sprinting off to run the relays.
The relays are always the climax of the meetings with the 4 x 100 followed immediately with the 4 x 400, hard going if you are running in both!
The 4 x 100 mts was Craig, Callum, Mark and Jamie coming home in fourth place in a time of 47.47 seconds.
The 4 x 400 mts was Alistair, Ryan, Craig and Jamie coming home in third place in a time of 3.41.29.
Final overall results on the day secured a well earned second place for the first meeting.
Team Match Pts Pts Victoria_Park 350 10 Whitemoss 322 9 Law 238 8 Corstorphine 232 7 Lasswade 216 6 Falkirk 193 5 Dunfermline 164 4 Clydesdale 101 3 Aberdeen 0 0
Whilst every athlete performed great on the day, the Team Managers athlete of the day goes to Craig McEwan who competed in an unbelievable five events and without one word of complaint !, well at least not to me, well done Craig and well done to all.
Special thanks to Steven Whyteside who was our Field official for the day. To Rebecca Stoddart who input all the results into my slow lap top. To Cathy Robertson who assisted Becci all day and finally to John Robertson who ran further than most, with the exception maybe of Martin, Alistair and Stuart.
The second meeting is also at Grangemouth on the 24th of June. This is only 8 weeks away and I need to know who is or is not available as soon as possible.
I would also appreciate any one who would be willing to volunteer to assist on the day. We must provide a minimum of three helpers on the day, one of which must be graded, Stephen covers this criterion, but we need two helpers!! Many Thanks to one and all Keith Stoddart Team Manager 2007.

I'm still a bit giddy after my 22 laps of the Grangemouth track today!
It was a great effort by everyone. Hopefully the standard can be maintained and we can step up to Division One again.
