Men’s League Report - Match 2 – 24th June 2007 – Grangemouth
Due to the untimely clash of the EK Half Marathon, the day started out at 10 am in the St Leonards car park, but the weather looked very ominous with clouds and rain threatening in the East. One or two bodies arrived late, but the traffic was horrendous due to the blocked roads for the half marathon. Fortunately we only had one call off, Martin Duthie, with Achilles heel problems. Hopefully he’ will be healed and available for next month.
We were not convening today thankfully, but still had to field one qualified official and two track or field helpers. So I was pleased to see a trio of non-competing adults arrive offering service and transport. The field events were supposed to kick off at 12 noon sharp with the pole vault and Long Jump. However the deluge of rain caused the Pole to be cancelled. No such luck for the young long jumpers Ryan Holmes and Stuart Jamieson. Ryan came second with a jump of 5.25 mts and young Stuart, who made his Men’s League debut , came a respectable fourth with 4.47 mts.
The track started of with the 400 mts hurdles with an unwell Scott Davidson finishing third with a 61.34 second circuit and Billy McGill, yes really , was first with a 58.86 second finish, just a few seconds outside Scott’s club record of 56.36.
Next was the Hammer and with a distinct shortage of big powerful throwers, yours truly and Graeme Leggate filled the card. Keith Stoddart came fourth with a p.b and new club record at 27.20 mts, whilst Graeme was fifth with a 15.87 mts launch. Some practice at the track required, me thinks
A break in the weather and the bailing out of the pole pit allowed the pole event to be re scheduled and was declared back on . Unfair peer pressure was placed on several competent athletes who were recommended in no uncertain terms that they should decline to compete as an individual coach felt the conditions were too dangerous . Therefore David Robertson reluctantly pulled out of the competition. Craig McEwan, under no coach control came second in a depleted field with a clearance of 2.4 mts.
This was followed by the 800mts, where Scott Davidson and Stuart Gibson filled an 800-mtr-event gap finishing eighth and fifth respectively, though they wont believe it, this was for very valuable team points.
The 100 mts flat was contested with Iain McEwan Jnr, making a come back after a long absence. It seemed to do him good as he was first with a very respectable 11.73 seconds into a – 4m/s head wind. Ryan Holmes came second in a time of 12.03 again with a strong head wind. There was a guest 100 mts, which allowed Jamie McEwan and Callum White to get a run in with no pressures achieving times of 12.30 seconds and 12.50 seconds.
At the Triple Jump, David Robertson used his saved energy from not vaulting, to come first in the event with a leap of 11.75 mts . This beats a long-standing club record. by 1 cm previously held since 2003, by former club athlete Graeme Smith. Mark Stringer came second with a leap of 8.51 mts.
The 3000 mts Steeplechase is seven and a half laps of the track over high, wide barriers. We could only field one athlete this time, but Stuart Gibson ran a great race coming second with a very credible time of 10.41.30. Unfortunately with no second string runner, we dropped a few points here. Unbelievably Stuart hurdles the steeplechase barriers, including the water jump. The only runners I have ever seen doing this are the Kenyan elites Kosgei, Cherono and Kembo, I think we have our own Keen Yin.
The 110 mts hurdles is another favourite and Mark Stringer, who adores this event, ran close third in 22.23 seconds, again with a strong head wind. Unfortunately Ian McEwan Jnr was not feeling quite ready to tackle hurdles yet, but hopefully in four weeks time, he will be. Our other third choice hurdler Alan Scott was unavailable this time and again we dropped a few points here.
In the 400 mts flat Billy McGill finished fifth in 53.54 seconds with Jamie McEwan coming second in the B string event in 54.80 seconds.
The big throwers were back in action in the shot where Graeme Leggate threw 8.26 mts to finish fourth and Keith Stoddart threw 7.59 to come third.
In the 1500 mts Scott Davidson volunteered to fill the vacant slot and the keen one, Stuart Gibson covered the B string. Scott came seventh in 4.34.86 and Stuart finished fifth in 4.35.62. A gruelling event, not really distance or sprint.
The 200 mts were next, where Callum White finished sixth in 25.80 seconds and Jamie McEwan came second in 24.78 seconds, into a headwind on the straight.
The 5000 mts quickly followed where the white Kenyan, Stuart Gibson finished in fourth place? , unfortunately again we could not field a second string runner and dropped a few valuable points.
The last field event was the discus where Keith Stoddart finished fourth? with an under par 24.00 ish mts and Craig McEwan came third? with a launch of 22.00 ish mts, just before sprinting off to run in the 100 mts relays.
The relays are always the climax of the meetings with the 4 x 100 followed immediately with the 4 x 400, hard going if you are running in both! Fortunately, with a little coaxing which should not have been necessary, we had eight runners ready to go. Probably a first for Whitemoss AAC
The 4 x 100 mts was Callum, Iain, Jamie and Ryan coming home in second place.
The 4 x 400 mts was Billy, Stuart, Scott and Craig in third place.
Times for the 5000k and Relays will be added when available, also the discus didtances.
Final overall results on the day secured a well-earned second place for the second meeting.

Whilst every athlete performed great on the day, the Team Managers athlete of the day goes to
Stuart Gibson
who competed in four distance events. The 800, 1500, 3000S/C and 5000. Some guys combined events did not cover one full lap and others only did two or three laps. To put into perspective Stuart ran 10300 mts, that’s round the track 25 and three quarter times. All praise the white KEENYIN
Special thanks to Steven Whyteside who was once again our Field official for the day. Also thanks to Thom Jamieson, Iain McEwan Snr and Cathy Robertson who officiated on the day, in rather inclement weather.
The third meeting is at Meadowbank on the 22nd July. This is only 4 weeks away and I need to know who is or is not available as soon as possible.
I would also appreciate any one who would be willing to volunteer to assist on the day. We must provide a minimum of three helpers on the day, one of which must be graded, Stephen covers this criterion, but we need two helpers!! Many thanks to one and all Keith Stoddart - Team Manager 2007.
