Men’s League Report - Match 3 – 22nd July 2007 – Meadowbank
With 10 call offs from the squad , due to Holidays, work, Injuries and weddings? Yeah not even his own , it looked a bleak task for the Die Hards.
Fortunately Team McEwan was at FULL strength.
The weather forecast was atrocious, so waterproofs and umbrellas were packed. We should have known better and packed Sun Cream and Parasols.
We were not convening today thankfully, but still had to field one qualified official and two track or field helpers. Unfortunately we only had two, Steven and Anne and we were lucky to get away with competing at all. A MUST for the final meet is three helpers. Volunteer’s essential please. The field events kicked off at 12 noon sharp with the Hammer and Long Jump. There was only “A” string Hammer at this meeting and I humbly handed my spot to Stuart Boyd, who made a welcome return to the competing fold. He finished fourth with a throw of 26.74 mts, which will increase with training. In the Long Jump Ryan Holmes came third with 5.38 mts and Jamie McEwan finished a respectable second with a jump of 5.22 mts.
The track started of with the 400 mts hurdles with Craig McEwan coming third in a time of 67.86 seconds. We were unable to convince anyone to run a “B” string, can’t think why?
Next was the Discus and with a distinct shortage of big powerful throwers, yours truly and Stuart Boyd stepped up to the Dias. Keith Stoddart came third with a 25.32 mts whilst Stuart was third also with a 27.85 mts launch.
This was followed by the 800mts, where Stuart Gibson and Jamie McEwan filled an 800-mtr event finishing fifth in 2 minutes 5 seconds and fourth in 2 minutes and 39 seconds respectively. Good results for both of them.
Iain McEwan Jnr won the 100 mts flat , with a time of 11.24 seconds. Ryan Holmes came second in a time of 11.71. There was a guest 100 mts, which allowed Ian McEwan Snr to get a run in with a time of 13.00 seconds.
At the Triple Jump, Ryan Holmes discovered he can hop skip and jump quite well, to come first in the event with a leap of 11.87 mts. This beats the club record by 12 cm, previously achieved at the last league meeting by David Robertson. Jamie McEwan, not to be out done, also finished first in the “B” string with a very respectable leap of 10.06 mts.
The High Jump was another good points scorer for us where Ian McEwan Snr finished Joint First with an impressive 1.60 mts and where Craig McEwan, not be outdone also finished First with an equally impressive 1.60 mts.
The 3000 mts Steeplechasers stepped up to the mark and Joe Kealey made a welcome return and won with a time of 10 minutes and 6 seconds. Stuart Gibson ran a great race also coming first with a very credible time of 10.27.370.
The 110 mts hurdles were thankfully ran by Ian McEwan Jnr and he finished second in a time of 17.09 seconds, and without hitting a single hurdle. Unfortunately we had no one brave enough to “B” string.
In the 400 mts flat McEwan twins finished fifth in 55.38 seconds for Craig and with Jamie coming second in the B string event in 55.28 seconds.
In the 1500 mts Stuart Gibson came fifth in 4.43.65 but no one could manage to run just under the mile for us for a “B” string.
The 200 mts were next, where Ian McEwan Jnr finished second in 22.45 seconds and Ryan Holmes came third in 23.73 seconds.
The 5000 mts quickly followed where we were fortunate to have the services of a real distance runner . Robert Gilroy of Ronhill Cambuslang normally runs Half Marathons, so 5000 metres was just a warm up for him . Having never run the distance on the track, he was assured a p.b. and managed so with a win in 15 minutes and 49 seconds. The white Kenyan, Stuart Gibson also finished in first place with a terrific time of 16 minutes and 43 seconds.
The last field event was the Javelin where Craig McEwan came fourth with a launch of 32.35 mts, just before sprinting off to run in the relays. Keith Stoddart finished third with a throw of 28.67 mts.
The relays are always the climax of the meetings with the 4 x 100 followed immediately with the 4 x 400, hard going if you are running in both! Unfortunately, with Victoria Park/City of Glasgow our nearest rivals keen to secure a third league win, we had three brave guys doing the impossible.
The 4 x 100 mts was, Iain Jnr, Jamie, Craig and Ryan coming home in victorious first place in a terrific time of 45.11 seconds.
The 4 x 400 mts was, Stuart, Ryan, Iain Jnr and Craig where we limped home in fourth place with a time of 4 minutes and 1 second.
Final overall results on the day secured a well-earned first place for the third meeting. Victoria Park finished second on the day
That means after three meetings we are in second place with 25 points and . Victoria Park/City of Glasgow are winning with 26 points.
Another victory at the fourth meeting or even a second place finish would guarantee us promotion back up into the first division.
-----…..------…..-----…..-----…..-----…..-----…..-----…..-----…..-----…..-----
Whilst every athlete performed far too many events on the day, thanks to their absent team mates, the Team Managers athlete of the day goes to Ryan Holmes who competed in six events. The 100, 200, 4 x 100 relay, 4 x 400 relay, Long Jump and Triple Jump, with a new Club Record.
Thanks to Steven Whyteside who was once again our Field official for the day. Also thanks to Anne McEwan who gave up her free Sunday of peace and quite in an empty house to help out the Team .
The fourth and Final meeting is at Wishaw on the 26th August. This is only 4 weeks away and I need to know who is or is not available as soon as possible.
I would also appreciate any one who would be willing to volunteer to assist on the day. We must provide a minimum of three helpers on the day, one of which must be graded, Stephen covers this criterion, but we need two helpers!!
Many thanks again to the DIE HARDS
Keith Stoddart - Team Manager 2007.

Good to hear Gary will be "onshore" for the last League meeting. At least that's one helper slot filled !!!
Well done to everyone today. Glad I mentioned to Ryan on Thursday that he might be needed today !!! Well done Ryan. I have played my part.
Hopefully with a full squad & sufficient officials & helpers (inc Gary) for the last meeting promotion will be assured.
I look forward to hearing about it all at training next week. Well done Keith and all his man(ly) dudes (& Anne)
PS Golf was excellent !!!!!!

Depends what time you get back on Sunday? were only at Wishaw and the meet runs from 12 till 5 , you can always fill a late relay leg, Im sure Iain Jnr and Ryan would give up their slot

Hi all,
The whole team really did remarkably well but my vote goes to the White Kenyan yet again, Stuart Gibson, who just simply ran and ran and ran.... 10 700 meters overall ( over 5 events) and 3000 of these over steeplchase hurdles. 2 other 5 eventers were Jamie and Iain Jnr. Cramp just stopped Jamie competing in his 6th event of the day. Ryan and Craig who competed in 6 events each survived. I know Craigs used to doing 10 events but Ryan isnt and seemed to survive unscathed? maybe he should consider multis?
Well done team manager for spreading the load.

What about me? Can I not give up mine? It was a nasty shock being in the 400m relay after thinking I was getting out of it.

I managed to take 25 photos between races, still to get the film developed. Keith was taking a few as well.
