Mens League Match 4- Tale of the Walking Wounded
« Thread Started on Jul 13, 2008, 9:37pm »

In Keith's absence, I'll try a roundup of the day in his style.

Obviously someone took the rain and transported it to Toulouse judging by yesterday's Tour de France coverage. The whole day brought pleasant sunshine for the Whitemoss squad.

The day started at around 10am. Some met at the John Wright car park, others went direct. Some called off. George Dingwall (injury), Ryan Holmes (unable to get his shift covered), Martin Duthie (long term cycling injury), David Boyd and Gary Mackay (camping in a muddy field somewhere in Perthshire) and Joe Kealey (unavailable). Also missing were the gaffer, Keith, and the official official, Steven, both on their holidays. Graeme Leggate was caretaker boss and our official officials were Mark Stringer and Cathy Robertson with John Robertson being the 3rd helper.

We again had the support of our mascot, baby Callum. A points adjustment from the last meeting put us down to 5th in the league with 12 points. Shettleston and Ayr were tied on 10 and had strong line-ups out today to beat the drop. It would be a nervous afternoon.

The day started with the pole vault, David Robertson finishing 4th with another 4m clearance. Craig McEwan sat the event out due to continuing ankle trouble.

The first track event was the 400m hurdles. Scott Davidson returned from wherever he was last time and was 2nd A in 58.54. Paul White was 4th B in 66.8 before dashing off for the shot putt where he was 6th B in 8.22m. Ian McEwan Junior was 6th A in 8.87m.

Next was the 800m where Alistair Campbell was 5th in a fast A race in 2:02.97. Stuart Gibson stepped into the B slot and surprised himself with a time of 2:06.46, only 0.53 seconds outside his PB, for 6th place. Next was the 100m where Ian McEwan Junior was 3rd in a competitive A race with 11.40. A deeply tanned Jamie McEwan was 5th in the B event in 12.09.

Meanwhile, in the field, Scottish Combined Events champion Craig McEwan was 7th A at the long jump leaping 5.22m. Brother Jamie was 5th B with 5.09m. With Keith AWOL ;) no-one felt confident of making the minimum standard at the hammer.

Next was the 3000m steeplechase which most run a mile from doing. Stuart Gibson clocked 10:33.79 to finish 3rd A while Paul White filled the B space, finishing well within the standard. Sorry, didn't get position or exact time.

Next up 110m hurdles. Ian McEwan Junior was 3rd A in 17.23 while, with Mark officiating, Scott Davidson ran a remarkable 20.87 to be second B. He dusted himself down to do the 400m in 53.25 for 7th while Craig McEwan took 4th in the B race with 52.86. Scott and Craig swapped numbers for the discus. Craig was 6th with 27.99m and Scott 5th with 18.95m.

Elsewhere in the field, David Robertson was 5th in the triple jump leaping 11.04m. No B athlete this time. Ian McEwan Senior was 5th in the high jump. David Robertson did this too. Sorry, didn't get heights or positions. We were without Javelin George and Gary at the javelin. Craig and Ian McEwan Junior proved able deputies, Craig throwing 35.81m for 4th and Ian 26.10m for 5th.

Back on the track, Alistair Campbell was 7th A in the 1500m (4:41.59) while Paul White made the standard this time, finishing 7th B (4:53.85). A guy from Africa won. Baby Callum didn't look interested. A McEwan tag team filled the 200m. Ian Junior was 4th A in 22.87 and Jamie was 4th B with 24.70.

The final individual track event was the 5000m where Stuart Gibson was 6th A in 16:34.87 to complete a satisfying afternoon's work and welcome return to form. No-one else felt confident enough to give it a go. The race was won by 2 Africans in Shettleston colours. Mercifully Stuart was relieved from doing the 4 x 100m relay which became a Team McEwan affair. Sadly, a baton drop at the 3rd changeover ended our hopes but disqualification was averted and we came in 7th. No criticism, they had done 13 events between them by this time. Finally, the 4 x 400m team of David Robertson, Paul White, Alistair Campbell and Scott Davidson produced a heroic effort to take 4th in 3:32.20.

There followed an anxious wait to see if we had done enough. We had been hovering in 5th/6th almost the whole day. Finally we learned that we were 6th on the day ahead of Pitreavie and Giffnock with 221 points. Ayr were 5th on 272 but it wasn't enough and we had finished 6TH OVERALL to stay in Division 1 for another year. Ayr and Giffnock went down and Arbroath were champions.

I'm sure most people would have taken survival of offered considering our relegation 2 years ago. Today was certainly a team effort. Well done to all the athletes. Thank you to Mark, Cathy and John for officiating and Graeme for being team manager for the day. Last but not least thanks to Julie who went above and beyond the call of duty looking after our mascot Callum.

Let's win it next year!!

Big scott was awesome yesterday i know he has not ran for 8 weeks or so and yet he is the 13th fastest guy over 400 hurdles in scotland this year with that time. 53.25 for his flat 400 straight after an 110m hurdles experience is pretty good aswell. But david me and ali made it quite easy for him in the relay ;)

in the steeplechase i think i was second in the B with 11.59ish

A very big round of applause and a huge pat on the back from me to all the guys who competed on Sunday, was an incredible effort from everyone.

Many, many thanks to Cathy, John and Mark for doing the officiating duties, made my day even easier than usual.

As stand in team manager, I should pick one man for athlete of the match, but there were too many guys doing way more than they should've had too, so not going to single out any individual. Absolutely superb team effort.

Well done guys,

Graeme
